President Lacalle Pou led the central act for the Declaration of Independence

President Lacalle Pou led the central act for the Declaration of Independence

“The search for freedom for every Uruguayan is the best way we have to commemorate a date as important as the Declaration of Independence,” said the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, at the commemorative event held in Florida on Thursday 25.

President Luis Lacalle Pou, meanwhile, considered that “it is a good time to look back, but thinking ahead.”

In the commemorative act, in the Piedra Alta, in the city of Florida, the president was accompanied by the Vice President of the Republic, Beatriz Argimón; the assistant secretary of the Presidency, Rodrigo Ferrés; the mayor of Florida, Guillermo López; ministers and other national authorities.

“We have been coming here for many years, even before entering the Government. For us, it is a very important date; independence supposes freedom and free will, and that also brings as a consequence the responsibility of a nation and its rulers”, reflected Lacalle Pou, in dialogue with representatives of the journalistic media, after the act. And he added: “It’s a good time to look back a bit, but thinking ahead.”

The speaker representing the Executive Power during the commemorative act was the secretary of the Presidency of the Republic, Álvaro Delgado. “Right here, in Piedra Alta, 197 years ago the adventure of independent Uruguay began, of the free country, of the little piece of the world that belongs only to us, the Uruguayans,” he said.

He considered that “freedom implies the full exercise of rights and responsibilities” and that for this “a State that promotes the freedom of its people is needed.” He also recalled the president’s words regarding living in a free, tolerant and dialoguing Uruguay.

The hierarch said that “Uruguayans can say that we are freer” and listed a series of actions carried out by the national government. He stressed that children with fewer resources receive a “record investment” for their development, with some 50 million dollars per year for early childhood, and that they are committed to knowledge and training for them and for young people, “carrying forward the so postponed educational transformation, which is essential to build the Uruguay of the future”.
