The UN will launch on Friday in the Philippines a humanitarian initiative for 106.5 million dollars to help the victims of Typhoon Rai, which destroyed the south and center of the country last weekend, the agency’s coordinator announced Thursday night. in that country, Gustavo Gonzalez.
“Tomorrow we will carry out at the local level, with the international community represented in Manila (…), a presentation of humanitarian needs and the priority plan,” to help the population, he said at a press conference in New York.
“The financial need is 106.5 million dollars” for at least 530,000 people in the most affected areas, he said.
At least 375 people were killed and hundreds injured when Typhoon Rai tore through the center and south of this archipelago, destroying wooden houses, uprooting trees and cutting off power supplies on numerous islands.
The United Nations reported “utter devastation” in the areas hardest hit by Rai, which made landfall in the Philippines on Thursday as a super typhoon, the most powerful to hit the country this year.
