Repercussions against the compensation project for former Itaipu officials

Repercussions against the compensation project for former Itaipu officials

The Chamber of Deputies proceeded to approve the bill that would benefit former officials of the entity with a multimillion dollar sum; This decision generated many opinions in this regard since the origin of some “workers” is not very clear.

Coincidentally, at election time, the approval of the project is given, which could benefit around 16,000 people who would have been Itaipu officials. Doubts arise when the names of politicians, heirs and even deceased people appear on the payroll.

Chartist deputies and some liberals achieved with their vote that the aforementioned bill will be approved and now everything is in the hands of the Executive branch that will decide whether to veto it or promulgate it. The document mentions compensation and benefits to former workers, original workers, builders, direct contractors, both contractors and subcontractors of works, as landlords and sub-landlords of services and health and education agreements of the Itaipu plant.

From the Ministry of Finance, the director Félix Lugo, mentioned in brief statements that “there is still not much to say, but in general terms it is an unfeasible project and the Ministry of Finance will recommend its rejection.” On the other hand, some of those who would benefit affirm that this is a fight that they have been carrying out for more than 30 years and that they hope that it will soon become a reality.

Juan Rafael Caballero, Itaipu’s legal director, stated that “Itaipu owes nothing and from the entity we recommend that the veto be made, in this way Itaipu will bleed to death on the Paraguayan side.” For its part, Itaipu Binacional’s administration issued a statement mentioning that former workers of contractor and subcontractor companies, as well as landlords and sub-locators, were not part of the entity’s employee cadre.

Senator Desirée Masi mentioned through a tweet that this action is a “vito” with money from Itaipu. “US$ 900 million compensation to former PRIVATE contractor workers (the barons). She has already prescribed joint and several liability for NR”. Another deputy who declared against it was Celeste Amarilla, who said that Brazil is not going to pay any part and those who say that this is going to happen “are liars.” She sought to collect more opinions from other legislators but they did not return.

Although now everything depends on the Executive Branch, many argue that if approved, its execution would be unfeasible since Brazil cannot be forced to make a payment or distribute its tariff, since the neighboring country is still seeking to reduce Paraguay’s tariff. .
