The University Council (CU) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) appointed this Wednesday a new member of the Governing Board of the institution, as well as two new doctors emeritus, in addition to making modifications and reforms to various regulations.

As part of a long session held yesterday – lasting more than six hours – the agency approved the entry of the geology doctor Elena Centeno García to the Governing Board, replacing Jaime Urrutia Fucugauchi, who ended his duties.

On the other hand, the CU endorsed the appointment of Alicia Adelaida Girón González and Agustín López-Munguía Canales as doctors emeritus.

In the first case, the university mentioned that Girón González is a specialist in financial economics and feminist economics and, in addition, was the first woman to direct the Economic Research Institute (IIE).

Regarding López-Munguía, a review of his work as a chemical engineer in the pharmaceutical sector and his contributions in the development of enzymes to improve food and beverages was presented.

The highest house of studies also delivered yesterday the degree of doctor honorary cause to 12 national and foreign personalities who have merits exceptional and they have contributed to the development and aggrandizement of the sciences, the humanities and the arts.

At the ceremony, it was highlighted that among the winners is the film director Guillermo del Toro, as well as the feminist philosopher Judith Pamela Butler and the historian Javier Garciadiego Dantán.

In addition to them, this recognition was given to Manuel Castells Oliván, Joanne Chory, Ingrid Daubechies, María Rosario Dosal Gómez, María Ángeles Durán Heras, Rafael López Castro, Angelina Muñiz Sacristán, Lourival Domingos Possani Postay and Ricardo Rivero Ortega.

On the other hand, as anticipated the daythe University Council also approved modifications to the Regulation of Transparency and Access to Information of the UNAM.

One of the most significant changes was to add an article (48) in which it is established that Only those requests for access to information that are presented in a respectful manner will be attended to.without giving formality to those who contain offensive expressions against the people from whom data is requested.

In other matters, the General Statute of UNAM was reformed to add article 93 bis, which establishes that the person who files a complaint before the University Court and the Honor Commission has the right to be heard and informed of the actions that take place. carry out, as well as the conclusion to which there is place.

Another of the agreements reached by the highest governing body of the university was to create specialization in pulmonology and critical medicine, with the aim of training doctors prepared for health contingencies such as the covid-19 pandemic that is being suffered today throughout the world. world.

The CU also modified the Statute of the Open University System and Distance Education, so that its Advisory Council is chaired by the head of the General Secretariat of UNAM, instead of the head of the Secretariat of Institutional Development.
