Minister Bellolio: “Chile Vamos decided to support José Antonio Kast and I think it was the right decision”

Minister Bellolio: "Chile Vamos decided to support José Antonio Kast and I think it was the right decision"

Minister Jaime Bellolio did not vote for the President-elect and did not annul his suffrage, in the first round he opted for Sichel and before he had played it for Lavín. Today, almost a week after the election that gave Gabriel Boric the winner, the government spokesman honestly expressed the exceptions he had for the ballot that ended with the defeat of José Antonio Kast and the right wing in his nomination for La Moneda.

“I liked a more moderate center-right alternative, but there were two alternatives, especially coalitions that were different. Chile Vamos formally decided to support José Antonio Kast and I think that was the correct decision,” declared Bellolio, in conversation with Third.

Kast’s defeat against Boric ended up turning into a knockout from which the structure of Chile Vamos, as we know it until now, could hardly stand up. In any case, and as anticipated by the standard-bearer of the Christian Social Front, losing was also winning, and that 44% with which it remains – the same percentage with which the right lost the plebiscite of 1988 – gave it enough floor to erect itself. as an industry leader.

“It is obvious that we would have loved to give the band to someone from Chile Vamos. But democracy said otherwise. We must also evaluate in the context that we have had to govern, especially in the last two years, after a social outbreak, of a global pandemic that brought a gigantic social crisis that caused the loss of two million jobs, especially women; that the confinement generates problems in the field of mental health; that they postpone operations that are key to health, etc. “

For Minister Bellolio, who was considered the dolphin of José Antonio Kast, Boric’s victory was the culmination of a process that began years ago with student mobilizations. In addition, he affirmed that the government’s self-criticism will be made later and that the mandate of President Piñera will be evaluated with “different eyes” in the future.

“President Piñera has been the only center-right leader who has won an election twice and who has allowed the formation of a coalition and that is very valuable for the future,” the secretary of state told the morning.

And he added: “As a government we have to make that self-criticism and that reflection, but I don’t think this is the time. I do believe that it has to be done once the government ends, because what the center-right has to do -beyond each one of the parties, because it is not up to me to say as a spokesperson what they have to do – it is that we need to reconnect with the people of the country, to be an alternative for the future, which was in tune with the citizens and did face to face”.
