Members of Cuban civil society agree to make the transition to democracy viable

Cuba

MIAMI, United States. – More than 160 members of Cuban civil society have signed the document “Cuba Libre: Civic Commitment of Transition to Democracy”.

The signatories declare their desire for a peaceful and orderly transition to democracy as the only viable solution to the crisis in Cuba and they support specific commitments to propel it from an interim government.

The text only outlines essential points that would be part of a complex transition process and calls for a national debate on how to carry it out, as well as to coordinate strategies and agree wills for the good of the Cuban people.

According to the non-profit organization Archivo Cuba, “the letter denotes civic and political maturity in the Cuban opposition.”

It has been signed from Cuba and 16 other countries by a diverse group that includes figures in the struggle for human rights from very different fields and political positions.

Some have signed on as leaders or activists for more than 50 organizations. They include lawyers, artists, scientists, filmmakers, clerics, businessmen, writers, economists, former Cuban military officers, former political prisoners, doctors, musicians, journalists, university professors from various branches, trade unionists and others.

The document is the result of a non-institutional exercise that is not awarded to any group. It was inspired by previous and current efforts on transition and sociopolitical cohesion for a free Cuba. The text was consulted and modified with the input of a valuable number of participants before being disseminated to a larger number of people.

The virtual petition will allow Cubans around the world to subscribe to the message.

“In order to reduce reading time and considering that the connection is difficult and expensive within Cuba, the petition —which maintains all the essential points of the original document— was shortened to facilitate its circulation. Opponents and human rights activists will be able to continue contributing their support to the complete document”, indicates Archivo Cuba.
