Former undersecretary of Piñera, Katherine Martorell, acknowledges human rights violations during the social outbreak

The former Undersecretary for Crime Prevention under the second Government of Sebastian Pinera, Katherine Martorellrecognized that during the social outbreak there were violations against human rights.

The recognition occurred in the program 24 discussionsof the Chanel 24 hours, in the framework of a discussion on the proposal for a new Constitution. In this context, the former deputy Marcelo Diaz asked Martorell: “Do you agree with me, that in the social outbreak, under the Government of which you were part, there was a violation of human rights?”

“I agree that there was, and obviously we have to wait for the ruling of the courts, but I agree,” said the former undersecretary, adding that “there was also in previous (governments)”. When asked about which cases she was referring to, she did not specify which one.

Let us remember that the Prosecutor’s Office summoned the general director of Carabineros to testify, Richard Yanezas accused of possible crimes against human rights committed by the institution during the social outbreak.

The diligence is part of the investigation for alleged crimes against humanity, although it is linked to a case initiated in 2021 that seeks to establish command responsibilities for alleged “crimes of omission” in illegitimate pressures that occurred during the social revolt.
