Father Alberto Reyes: Cuba is an “ordeal of precariousness, of existential anguish”

Padre Alberto Reyes Pías, Cuba, cubanos

MIAMI, United States. — Father Alberto Reyes Pías, a Catholic priest from Camagüey, publicly denounced the precarious situation in which Cuba finds itself and blamed the island’s communist regime for the ordeal that Cubans have suffered for decades.

“Why has God allowed communism to come to the most prosperous of the Caribbean islands? Why has God allowed not only that we lose our freedom but that this dictatorship lasted more than 63 years, destroying the dreams of several generations? Why have you allowed so many valuable people to flee and abandon their land, even dying in the attempt?”, questioned the Cuban religious in social networks.

Reyes Pías assured that the Cuban people have been victims of “deep sufferings”, which happen, as he said, due to the impossibility of “growing” and having a prosperous life on the Island.

For the priest from Camagüey, Cuba has become an “ordeal of precariousness, of existential anguish, of overwhelming need.” He also expressed that the Castro rulers “do not care about our lives, or our dreams, or our present, or our future.”

“Could it be that we have not understood that “there is no country without virtue nor virtue with impiety”; that freedom is not begged but conquered; that those who govern us do not care about our lives, or our dreams, or our present, or our future; that those who have governed us and govern us do not care that our children die, ”he expressed.

The religious also criticized the rhetoric of the Cuban dictatorship, which for decades has tried to blame the United States government for the problems the country is going through.

“Could it be that we have been blaming an external enemy for years when, in reality, the enemy is at home?”

Similarly, the Father questioned the supposed democratic model imposed on the Island, which calls on the population to “exercise the right to vote” when “everything is, in reality, already decided.”

In recent years, Alberto Reyes Pías has become one of the most critical voices of the Cuban Catholic Church against the Castro regime, a fact that has condemned him to suffer harassment and harassment from the authorities.

Already in November 2020 the Camagüeyan priest denounced the repression that was experienced on the Island, assuring then that Cuba had become “a prison”.

“Cuba is a big prison where, if you misbehave, they put you in a smaller one. And as a jail at last, we feel controlled. We are afraid to say what we think, to say what we want. We are afraid that in one way or another they will block our study or work, that they will make our lives more difficult than it already is”, the Father pointed out on that occasion.
