The president of the National Elections Jury (JNE), Jorge Salas Arenas, considered that it is essential to promote a culture of peace so that the 2022 Regional and Municipal Elections process is carried out in an atmosphere of serenity and without violence.
Salas Arenas indicated that the actions initiated by this electoral body, through the “Seeds of peace, trees for democracy” campaign, which is part of the “Choose a culture of peace” strategy, is a symbolic way of promoting tolerance and peace.
“We have to work in a sustained way so that tolerance is breathed, so that ideas are fought with ideas and that hatred is banished from people’s consciences”, he stated during his participation in the ceremony that was held at the National University of Cajamarca (UNC) to promote said campaign.
The head of the JNE also mentioned that the country is experiencing constant political crises that affect the entire society, so this, in turn, affects the system of values, including democratic ones.
“Democracy, which may be imperfect as a system, is the best way of life that societies have. We must, therefore, settle it materially. We have to bequeath a more certain and peaceful future to our children and grandchildren“, held.
At another time, Jorge Salas Arenas asserted that the authorities and public servants have to correct their behavior, for which he assured that those who have to assume responsibility and pay for them will do so.
Added to this, he said that the National Elections Jury and the electoral system provide legitimacy to the elected authorities, through transparent elections, but that the legitimacy of performance must be achieved by each authority with the fulfillment of its commitments and duties.
