MIAMI, United States. — Canadian tourism continues to be the lifeline of the Cuban regime in 2022, as shown by the latest official statistics published by the Island Statistics and Information Office (ONEI).

After last July’s update, the figures reaffirm Canada as the main source market for tourists to the Island, with 258,896. Canadians are followed by Cuban emigrants, with 183,880, and American visitors, with 52,673. .

Among the countries that contribute the greatest number of visitors to tourism in Cuba are also Spain (42,057), Russia (38,041), Germany (31,047), England (27,270), France (26,888), Italy (18,679 ) and Mexico (14,747).

Of other nationalities, 140,713 visitors have arrived on the island so far this year, according to the report published by ONEI.

The data, provided to that entity by the Information of the Directorate of Identification, Immigration and Aliens, shows a growth in the number of visitors with respect to the same period last year, when the Island was going through its worst moment of the COVID-19 pandemic. 19.

According to the ONEI, up to the month of July, 1,200,580 travelers were received, which represents 552.3% compared to the same period in 2021, that is, 983,216 more travelers.

In the same period, 834,891 international visitors were received, 590.9% higher than the same period in 2021, which translates into 693,592 more international visitors.

Although most of the source markets have increased the number of tourists due to the end of the migratory restrictions derived from the pandemic, Russian tourism has decreased considerably, with just 38,041 visitors.

In June of this year, pro-democracy activists and members of the Cuban exile community called on the Canadian government and citizens not to support the Castro regime in the framework of the campaign “Unlock Cuba”an initiative that seeks to shed light on repressive practices and human rights violations on the Island.

The initiative sought to inform the citizens of that country about how the regime uses funds from areas such as tourism to maintain its repressive machinery against the Cuban people.
