Law passed that compensates US$ 940 million to former Itaipu workers

The Chamber of Deputies approved this Wednesday the bill that establishes special compensation for former Itaipu Binational workers.

After an extensive debate, with 57 votes in favor, 18 against, 2 abstentions and 3 absentees, the bill “Establishing the legal framework for the payment of historical compensation to former workers, plant builders, assembly and start-up of Itaipu’s generating units, directly hired by contractors and subcontractors of works, landlords and sub-locators of services and health and education agreements, on the right bank”.

According to the text of the bill, it aims to meet labor claims and the rights and benefits not received by former workers, and cites as an example the annuennium (additional due to seniority); productivity; food voucher; uprooting; additional on vacations; Christmas bonus on additional vacations; uprooting and others.

The controversial project establishes the payment of a series of benefits to around 15,000 people who worked on the right bank, representing an investment of around USD 940 million.

It is worth mentioning that the authorities of Itaipu Binacional have already expressed their rejection of the bill, since they consider that said legislative proposal goes against the entity’s legal principles and would be totally inapplicable, both economically and legally.

The authority also mentioned that the project intends to incorporate obligations to the Binational on labor contracts in which it was not a celebrant and for benefits that it was never obliged to pay.

The document passes to the Executive Power for its promulgation or veto.
