The detainee is accused of crimes of forced disappearance, torture and against the administration of justice for the Ayotzinapa case. When on September 26, 2014, 43 students from the Normal School of the State of Guerrero were disappeared and at the time it was confirmed that they had been murdered -and burned-, in a dark partnership between drug traffickers and municipal police from the municipality of Iguala, Cocula and Huitzuco. Murillo Karam is an expert in politics, like few others in the country. He has known the “highest” positions within it: governor, local and federal deputy, senator and federal cabinet official.
The holocaust against the students of Ayotzinapa was a true torment for his function, to such an extent that the unfortunate phrase that he said: “I’m tired of it,” caused social anger in Mexico and other countries to fall on him. This frayed his public image to such a degree that he asked then-president Peña Nieto for his resignation, but the PRI sent him to the secretariat of the Secretariat for Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development.

The crimes he is accused of – torture, forced disappearance and obstruction of justice – may not be enough to convict him before López Obrador leaves the presidential chair. Even the first two crimes he is charged with were not present in the criminal code when he allegedly committed them, so the principle of non-retroactivity of the law could apply.

However, beyond what happened in 2014 and 2015, a detail has strongly drawn attention to Murillo Karam’s millionaire fortune.
