The Senate Security Commission will begin to debate the compendium of indications presented by the Government of President Gabriel Boric to the project that creates the Ministry of Public Security.
The initiative was presented during the administration of Sebastián Piñera and, in its last session, the Executive presented a series of measures that involve greater civil control over police institutions.
in conversation with Radio Bio Biothe head of the PPD bench in the Senate, Jaime Quintana, pointed out that the debate could be the most important in recent times.
“The ministry, which is a change in governance, which may be the most important discussion on public security in recent times, and which allows for a certain hope for what is going to be the fight against organized crime in general,” he said.
Meanwhile, from the opposition, they are in favor of the initiative in general terms. This, considering that its parliamentarians promoted the initiative during the last administration.
The head of the UDI bench, Jorge Alessandri, urged the Executive to speed up the process, recalling that the process is slow.
“The creation of the Ministry of Security is one of the initiatives that is resting in the Senate. Every time the undersecretaries have gone to the Commission, we have told it to take advantage of these projects that have already begun the legislative process to gain time. Having a Ministry of Security It’s good news,” he said.
For his part, the president of the Security Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Leiva (PS), said that security must be a policy that must follow the same line, regardless of the government.
“Public policies on security must be developed in the medium and long term, and not be subject to the government in power. It is necessary for Chile to have a permanent, transversal security policy,” he stated.
