Cuban women’s pentathlon qualifies for the next Central American and Caribbean Games

The Cuban women’s modern pentathlon team achieved this Thursday its classification for the Central American and Caribbean Games next year in San Salvador.

The pentathletes of the Island got the ticket during the Open Pan American Championship of that sport that is celebrated in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republicaccording to official media.

In the collective fight, the Cubans Diana Leyva, Delmis Pérez and Melissa Garlobo formed the third best cast among the countries of the Norceca region behind Mexico and Guatemala, according to a report from the agency Latin Press (PL).

Meanwhile, in the individual competition, Diana won the bronze medal among 18 competitors in the regional segment of the competition, while finishing in tenth position in the Pan American Open. She did so with an accumulated 1298 points, after placing 14th in fencing, sixth in swimming, 12th in horse riding and 13th in the combined shooting and running test.

The highest position on the podium in the test went to the Guatemalan Sophia Hernández (1,438), escorted by the Argentinian Camila Fuenzalida (1,398) and Paula Verdecia (1,368), also from the Central American country. PL.

Among the other registered Cubans, Delmis got the second best position with a 12th place, thanks to her 1292 units (17th place in fencing, 8th in swimming, 10th in horse riding and 12th in the combination of shooting and running), underlines the publication.

This Friday was the turn of the Cuban pentathletes, who will be involved in the men’s final. In it, Juan Pablo Velázquez, Marcos Rojas and Lester Ders have the same goal as their compatriots: fight for tickets to the regional multi-sport event in San Salvador 2023.

With these results, the Cuban Pentathlon teams return to first-level competitions, after two years without facing their rivals in the area due to the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
