Rosario Robles: “I am innocent and that will be verified"

Rosario Robles: “I am innocent and that will be verified"

“I want to thank so many people, so many people who never let me go, who wrote to me, who sent me messages, who sent me food, who believed in me without knowing me, I tell them that I am not going to disappoint them because I am innocent and that is going to be verified”, assured.

This Friday, Judge Ganther Alejandro Villar Ceballos determined to modify the precautionary measure of the former secretary: from preventive detention to periodic presentation before the judicial authority.

“It has been three years of a lot of learning, three years in which I have known injustice firsthand, the reality of many women for whom I will continue fighting. I only have a huge thank you to those who sheltered me here and also, of course, the minister (Arturo) Zaldívar, thanks to him the situation of many other women was made visible. I am one of the 180 who are in court, in court 14 of amparo for being in excessive preventive detention. I truly hope that, as you promised here, justice will be done for all the women who are unjustly imprisoned in Santa Martha Acatitla”, he said.

Last March around 500 women sent a letter to the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, Arturo Zaldívar, to denounce mistreatment and precarious conditions in their internment in Santa Martha Acatitla.

“Your Honor, the women deprived of their liberty in Santa Martha Acatitla are writing to you regarding March 8, International Women’s Day. We do it because on previous occasions, he is the only one who has responded to our demands for justice and because he presides over the institution in charge of ensuring that our Constitution is respected,” said the letter sent by the women and delivered by Rosario Robles’ daughter, Mariana Moguel.

In May, the President of the Court visited the prison to talk with 220 women sentenced and prosecuted. His stay lasted for about three hours.

Upon his release from prison, Robles assured that he will take up the cause of women who are deprived of their liberty.

“I take this cause as one more of the causes for which I have fought in the country, I take this cause not only to make this situation visible and how absurd our prison systems are, how obsolete it is, but also to be seen by the Power Legislative, the Executive Power, I think I have the chance to be a voice so that this is modernized and is something in line with our new penal system, which is a system in favor of rights”, he stressed.

Upon her release from prison, Rosario Robles was received by her daughter Mariana Robles, her brothers and her lawyer Epigmenio Mendieta.
