Human Rights Secretary Horacio Pietragalla Corti will travel to Chubut to be present at the different activities that will take place in the province in commemoration of the Trelew Massacre, official sources reported.

Pietragalla Corti, will arrive in Trelew on Sunday to sign the Penal Unit 6 of Rawson as a site of memory of State terrorism, according to a statement.

In the place, two plaques will also be unveiled in homage to the victims and a tour of this unit of the Federal Penitentiary Service will be carried out, where men and women – political, trade union and social activists persecuted for political reasons – have been detained since the 1960s and , with greater intensity, during the last civic-military dictatorship.

The day will continue with the screening of the documentary “La Casa de los uncles”, by Verónica Rossi, at the Espacio INCAA Trelew, and a cultural vigil at the city’s Municipal Gymnasium No. 1.

The central act will be Monday, the date on which the 50th anniversary of the execution of 16 political prisoners is commemorated.

The Secretariat will signpost the Old Airport of Trelew, where the Cultural Center for Memory and the Provincial Archives also operate, which is part of the Federal Network of Archives for Memory.

In addition, the “Day of the Escape” poster, the “19 Red Roses” mural and plaques in tribute to the victims will be inaugurated at the site.

The day will conclude with the act of the Commission for the Memory of the People in the Plaza Independencia and Cultural Center for the Memory of Trelew.

On Tuesday, as part of the commemoration activities, officials and workers of the National Archive of Memory will participate in the Meeting of the Federal Network of Archives of Memory – Patagonia Region, which aims to “share work experiences and challenges of the different institutions participants”.

In the early hours of August 22, 1972, during the dictatorship headed by Alejandro Lanusse, Argentine Navy forces murdered 16 political prisoners held at the Almirante Zar Naval Air Base in Trelew.

The victims were members of the FAR, ERP and Montoneros organizations who had managed to escape from the Rawson prison unit and who, given the impossibility of escaping the country, surrendered to the Armed Forces in the presence of a judge and television cameras.

In 2021, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation confirmed the life sentence of Carlos Amadeo Marandino for the executions, sentenced in 2012 along with two other former marines, Luis Emilio Sola and Emilio Jorge del Real, who died in the course of the years.

Last month, former marine Roberto Bravo was sentenced to pay compensation to relatives of the victims of the Trelew massacre by a court in the southern district of Florida, in the United States, where he resides.

The Argentine justice continues to request his extradition so that Bravo can be tried in the country.
