Opponents urge to continue with "days of fasting and prayer" in the face of an attack against the Church of Nicaragua

Social, union and political organizations demand that the Nicaraguan regime respect the life and physical integrity of Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, who in the early hours of this August 19 was arrested and forcibly transferred to his home in Managua, where he remains under house by de facto prison by members of Daniel Ortega.

«The tyrannical regime of Ortega and Murillo, knowing that the kidnapping of Monsignor (Rolando Álvarez) and his companions was going to mean repudiation and citizen mobilization, decided to raid the curia and transfer them to Managua in the early hours of the morning to maintain control of the protest. Recently, the Ortega Police reported that the hierarch is under the prison regime of house by jail in his parents’ home in Managua and seven of the eight people who accompanied him remain under “investigation” in El Chipote. The signatory organizations ask citizens to continue with “the day of fasting and prayer initiated by the Church and to initiate organized actions of active resistance as a way of demonstrating to the tyrannical regime of Ortega and Murillo that the people of Nicaragua continue in his fight.”

They also urge the international community “to use all its diplomatic means to achieve an end to the repression of the Catholic Church, the guarantee of respect for religious freedom and the return to democracy in Nicaragua.”

The attack against Monsignor Álvarez continued this morning with the raid on the house of the bishop’s parents, located in Managua, where they later left him locked up, imposing the siege on his relatives as well.

The bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa made it clear during his confinement that there are no reasons why the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo initiate an alleged investigation of him. They point out that it generates anxiety in the country.
