HAVANA, Cuba.- From the Combinado del Este prison of maximum rigor, which is located at kilometer 13 ½ of the Monumental road, in the Guanabacoa municipality of the capital of the island, the demonstrator of the 11J Duannis Dabel León Taboada denounces the repression to which he has been subjected in that prison.
León Taboada, who is turning 24 this August 19, says that he is a native of the Víbora Park neighborhood, belonging to the Arroyo Naranjo municipality.
As the protester told CubaNet, on July 11, 2021, he paraded down the Diez de Octubre road along with many other citizens who, like him, demanded food, medicine and freedom. He also narrates that on July 16 of that year two unidentified individuals kidnapped him at gunpoint and took him to the police unit of the Capri neighborhood, where he stayed only one day and where he was beaten.
León Taboada explained that the following day they took him to the Criminal Investigation and Operations Division of 100 y Aldabó, where they kept him for 40 days. Later, he was transferred to the Valle Grande maximum rigor prison, in La Lisa, where he remained captive for three months until he was finally transferred to Combinado del Este.
The young man also details that he was tried on January 31 in the Municipal Court of Diez de Octubre, located in Carmen number 501 between Juan Delgado and Goicuría, in the Víbora district. He emphasizes that the process was nothing more than a great theater plagued with lies in which he was not even allowed to speak. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Duannis Dabel denounced to CubaNet that after his sentence he was relocated from building 3 to 1, where the military incited two common prisoners to beat him. In addition to the above, on Saturday, July 30, he was transferred “in a wheelbarrow”, a type of torture in which the guard grabs the prisoner by the neck after inserting his arm between his hands handcuffed behind his back. This punishment was applied in retaliation for his cries of protest when he witnessed the brutal beating of prisoner Yuri Almenares by the guards.
The young protester indicated that before being arrested he was a self-employed barber. It is currently located on the 3rd floor, south wing of building 1.
