The protesters gathered this Friday at mid-morning, at the intersection of Avenida de Mayo and Bernardo de Irigoyen, in downtown Buenos Aires, and are now marching towards Plaza de Mayo.
With a mortuary drawer and several flower crowns, with the legend “We say goodbye to the minimum wage”, the leftist piqueteros organizations marched on this occasion in the framework of the staging of a wake: “The salary has died. The workers of the social organizations, cooperatives, precarious, we say goodbye to their remains in Plaza de Mayo”, according to what they pointed out in the call.
Protest It even included the publication of a funeral notice in the printed edition of the newspaper La Nación.: “Relatives and workers from all over the country announce with deep sadness the death of the SMVM,” says the text, referring to the minimum wage.
As Marianella Navarro, one of the FOL spokespersons, told Télam, the march will travel from Avenida de Mayo and 9 de Julio to Plaza de Mayo, calling for an increase in the Minimum Vital and Mobile Wage “above inflation” and a reduction of 21 percent of VAT on food from the basic food basket, among other claims.
The protest was organized by the Front of Organizations in Struggle (FOL), fractions of the MTD Aníbal Verón and the Darío Santillán Popular Front, MRP Popular Resistance and MTR for Direct Democracy.
Next Monday the meeting of the National Council for Employment, Productivity and the Minimum Vital and Mobile Wage will be held at the Ministry of Labor, where a new wage floor will be defined and the amount referred to unemployment will be updated.
“The salary is defended with struggle, to support a dignified life for the millions of humblest workers in this country,” the organizations said in a joint statement.
