US Says 'Significantly Corrupt' Designations Are Based on Evidence

The President of the Republic, Mario Abdo, said that he instructed the National Foreign Minister, Julio Arriola, to request information from the US Embassy.

When asked if the president considers it an interference on the part of the US to designate Paraguayan authorities as significantly corrupt, he said that “They have their own Law, they are governed by the obligation granted by the legal framework. They are sovereign like us»

For his part, the United States ambassador to Paraguay, Marc Ostfield, announced that he had met with Foreign Minister Julio Arriola. “I assured him that significant corruption designations are not political,” he said.

The senior official stated that the United States will continue to use “all available tools” to fight corruption. He confirmed that they make decisions “solely based on evidence.”
