Beatriz Argimón, Vice President of the Republic, assumed the Presidency of Uruguay on Thursday, on the occasion of the trip to the Republic of the Congo of the president, Luis Lacalle Pou.
In the session of December 15, the Senate approved the transfer of command, before the request for authorization presented by Lacalle Pou, in order to leave the country for more than 48 hours.
During her trip, Beatriz Argimón will hold the presidency and Senator Graciela Bianchi, vice presidency until December 26, informed the Presidency in a statement.
The handover ceremony was held at Air Base No. 1 Gral. Cesáreo Berisso, which shares a runway with Carrasco International Airport.
The minutes were signed by Lacalle Pou, Argimón and the secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado. In addition, the president’s wife, Lorena Ponce de León, and the Chancellor of the Republic, Francisco Bustillo, attended the ceremony.
The president will be outside the national territory until Sunday, December 26, for accompany the Uruguayan Army and Air Force soldiers participating in the United Nations stabilization mission in the city of Goma, Republic of the Congo.
They will also travel to the central African country, the minister and the undersecretary of National Defense, Javier García and Rivera Elgue, respectively; the commander-in-chief of the National Army, Gerardo Daniel Fregossi, and that of the Air Force, Luis De León; the head of the Military House, César Ifrán, and the aide-de-camp of the Air Force, María Etcheverry.
