The state of São Paulo will indemnify the families of the nine young people, between 14 and 23 years old, who died after an action by the Military Police during a prom funk in Paraisópolis, in December 2019.
The Attorney General of the State (PGE) and the Public Defender of São Paulo this week finalized the administrative agreements to make the indemnification.
At the request of the families themselves and as provided for by law, the values and terms of the agreements are confidential, having been established based on legal criteria similar to those that guaranteed, also in 2019, administrative compensation to victims and relatives of the attack that took place at the State School Professor Raul Brasil, in Suzano (SP).
The State Attorney General’s Office has already completed the analysis of all requests made by the Public Defender’s Office and made available the amounts for payment of indemnities. The first deposits were made this week and the others await information to be provided by the Defender’s Office.
According to the PGE, this is an inter-institutional action that guaranteed, in a short period of time, the legal analysis of the facts from the point of view of the State’s objective civil liability, with no examination of any individual responsibilities in the episode in this sphere, which are determined in its own headquarters.
Criminal process
Although the agreement at the administrative level has been concluded, the criminal process continues to proceed normally. In July, the Public Ministry of São Paulo denounced the 13 police military personnel who participated in the operation in the community of Paraisópolis. Of those, 12 were reported for murder and one for putting people in danger with an explosion.
