The Autana Shield operation began in the mining areas of Bolívar on Sunday, August 14, according to information released by the Comprehensive Defense Operational Zone (Zodi) 62, with the aim of “dismantling subversive and guerrilla groups” that operate in the area.
A group of miners and residents of the town of Tumeremo, Sifontes municipality of Bolívar state, protested this Tuesday the 16th to denounce alleged abuses and violation of their rights during the execution of the Autana I 2022 Bolivarian Shield military operation.
The demonstration was held at the entrance of the town, near the passenger terminal, in the middle of trunk 10, the highway that connects Venezuela with Brazil, in protest at the alleged burning of camps, seizure of machinery and medicines from clinics.
The residents of Tumeremo also denounced that the military beat those who are inside the mines. The miners requested the intervention of President Nicolás Maduro and assured that they all have their legal documentation to work and are endorsed by the Venezuelan Mining Corporation (CVM).

“Mr. Nicolás Maduro, please stop this Autana plan, this military movement that is coming towards us. We are not terrorists, we are legal miners and we work with you. We paid an arrime (gold) to the CVM”, said a woman in a video broadcast on social networks. She claimed to be in the Nueva Jerusalem mine, a deposit near the town.

Another woman, who appears in a second video posted on social media, called for the troops to withdraw. “The Army is running over us, it is burning everything and they are mistreating us. They leave us homeless to live and hit the entire mining population. We need them to withdraw the Army because we will not allow them to take away our children’s support, ”she indicated.
