The Government of Buenos Aires announced a new system to obtain a driver’s license for the first time in the City of Buenos Aires, which contemplates that the practical driving test be taken on the street and not on the track of Roca Avenue, with the purpose that future drivers “face real situations”.

“If we manage to have better drivers, we will have fewer accidents,” assured the head of the Buenos Aires Government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, during the press conference headed by Felipe Miguel, chief of staff; and Manuela López Menéndez, Secretary of Transportation and Public Works.

In this context, he explained that “The exam is going to be on the street so that they face real situations that drivers have every day.”

The new modality seeks to improve “road safety and coexistence” through changes to the protocol for the authorization of new drivers, as well as the incorporation of modifications to the theoretical exam, based on an increase in the number of questions, and a extension of the term of the license.

Categories considered

The initiative will govern the granting of driving licenses for vehicles included in the B1 category and will begin to be implemented this Wednesday in Commune 12, and will continue gradually until October 15, the date on which the 10 locations planned in the entire district of Buenos Aires.

Currently, those who must take the practical driving test go to the track on Roca Avenue, in the south of the city, where an examiner evaluates driving skills based on the execution of a series of maneuvers such as walking back and parking in no more than three moves.

With the new protocol, the exam will move to the streets of Buenos Aireswhich were defined by the local authorities from the election of “circuits” located in a radius not greater than 500 meters from the community headquarters, and will have an estimated duration of 15 minutes.

will be used dual command cars, which will be connected to an Integrated Monitoring System, from where the route will be controlled in real time; while the applicants will be able to know in advance the dashboard of the car they will get into and will have the option to choose the type of gearbox between manual and automatic.

The new system to process the card, meanwhile, will increase “the rigor” of the theoretical examwhich will go from requiring the applicant to answer the questionnaire correctly from 75% to 85%, while also increasing the number of questions from 30 to 40 and they will have 45 minutes to complete it.

Finally, there will be a change in the validity period of the licenses that will be adjusted to a series of factors, among which the age of the driver stands out.

Persons up to 39 years of age will be granted a license for 10 years; those between 40 and 49 years old, for six years; those from 50 to 69, for four years and those over 70, for two years.
