Political prisoners Edgar Parrales and Evelyn Pinto need specialized medical assistance

Political prisoners Edgar Parrales and Evelyn Pinto, both imprisoned during the wave of kidnappings ordered by the Ortega-Murillo regime last November, they still do not receive the specialized medical attention they require due to their health conditions, reported their relatives in an interview with CONFIDENTIAL.

Children’s rights advocate Evelyn Pinto, 62, is a cancer survivor. He does not have a thyroid and is a patient with chronic kidney failure, which requires a specialized check-up and monitoring of his creatinine levels.

In the case of former Ambassador Parrales, 79, a specialized colonoscopy is urgently needed, as he has chronic digestive problems. Ten years ago they removed his large intestine, he has diverticulitis and a hernia.

The specialized medical procedure required by the also political analyst was scheduled with his family doctor, prior to being arbitrarily imprisoned, for mid-December, which would make it possible to know whether or not he needs to operate on the hernia and the risks that this entails.

After more than a month of arbitrary detention, without the right to visit from relatives or lawyers, the relatives of Pinto and Parrales are not sure that both political prisoners are receiving the specialized medical attention they require or the medicines they must take daily.

On December 16, Noel Alonzo, Parrales’ lawyer, filed a second emergency letter before the Judiciary, requesting that his client receive medical assistance and undergo a colonoscopy. However, neither the defense nor the family have received a response.

“For the second time I request that you, as a guarantee judge, order the head of the Directorate of Judicial Aid of the National Police to take the corresponding actions so that my client, Edgar Francisco Parrales Castillo, has the corresponding colonoscopy examination and effectively prevent their personal integrity and life itself from being impaired that leads to a tragic end ”, indicates part of the document introduced by the defense before the Ninth Criminal District Court of Hearings.

The letter also suggested that Parrales be examined “urgently” by a forensic doctor from the Institute of Legal Medicine “to determine his medical condition and whether or not he can remain in prison given his state of health that requires specialized medical assistance. permanent diet and diet according to his medical condition ”.

Edgar Parrales was captured on November 22, 2021 by individuals in civilian clothes when he was leaving his home in Los Robles, Managua, and remains imprisoned in the facilities of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as the new Chipote. The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) denounced, on November 23, that the former diplomat was accused of “inciting violence”, in a hearing in which neither his relatives nor his private defense were present.

Relatives of Parrales, national and international organizations, including the Office of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor of the Department of State of the United States, have demanded the “immediate release” of the former diplomat.

“We call on the Ortega-Murillo regime to release Edgar Parrales, former Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States. Ortega-Murillo continues to arrest anyone who disagrees with them publicly, even after obtaining a victory in the mock elections on November 7, “said the US State Department through its social networks.

Pinto required check-up since November

In the case of the political prisoner Evelyn Pinto, her daughter Silvia Nadine Gutiérrez denounced, in an interview with CONFIDENTIALHe needed his specialized check-up and creatinine control since mid-November, for which they have filed two court documents requesting that he be given the specialized medical assistance he requires. However, they have not responded or informed them if the required medical examinations have been carried out.

He also stressed that his mother, who also suffers from hypertension, was in strict compliance with his medicines, but for now they are also unaware if the medicines they take to the prison are delivered to him.

Pinto was detained since last November 6 and is accused of violating the Cybercrime Law. The defender has been imprisoned since December 1 in the National Penitentiary System for Women, known as La Esperanza. Relatives of the defender denounce that the process has been “arbitrary”Since no response has been given to any of the appeals introduced, he has not been allowed to have his private defense, despite the fact that this was announced through various writings; and they are late informed of the hearings.

Evelyn Pinto is a retired woman who has worked all her life in causes for the defense of the rights of children and adolescents, from her work at Fe y Alegría. In addition, it participated in plans for inclusive education and collaborated closely with indigenous peoples on the issue of territory and the legal framework that would allow them to defend their spaces.

“We demand his immediate freedom, respect for his physical integrity and that he can be seen by a doctor as soon as possible to know his state of health. We are also asking that it be possible to see, that they allow us this visit that in theory should be this week, to be able to see her, talk with her and know her state of health ”, urged Silvia Nadine.
