The magic of the old Modern cinema

The magic of the old Modern cinema

At number 365 of the Diez de Octubre road, between Rodríguez and Luyanó road, there are the ruins of what was the Modern cinema.

Inaugurated in 1929, it was designed by the architect Ernesto López Rovirosa, with a stepped façade style art deco, whose elegance always seems current, and a frieze with floral motifs of which no trace remains. The building had a single room, with capacity for 1,180 people, and was closed indefinitely in 2002.

“I remember seeing the James Cagney and Bowery Boys movies at the Modern”

Its remains, sadly beautiful, still show signs of its former splendor, like dozens of more cinemas in the Cuban capital, which one day, before the Revolution, had more rooms than New York. In those seats several generations of Havanans enjoyed great films, and the residents of the municipality of Diez de Octubre evoke it with special nostalgia.

“I remember seeing the James Cagney and Bowery Boys movies at the Modern, the entrance cost 30 cents,” says an elderly resident of the place.

Another younger man, in his 40s, replied: “When we were boys we used to go in a group to see Japanese series adapted for the cinema, Mazinger Z or Voltus 5, which were fashionable at that time. “And he sighs for that lost world:” The place had its magic.
