Users of the social network Twitter reported a drop in electricity approximately at 3:30 in the afternoon of this August 13. The situation was registered in at least nine states and in the capital of Venezuela. According to statements by the Venezuelan authorities, the failure was caused by an atmospheric discharge resulting from a storm that passes through much of the country.
After the fluctuation, several areas of Miranda and Falcón were left without the service. Among the states where there was a report of the momentary blackout are Merida, Zulia, Trujillo, Barinas, Vargas, Aragua, Anzoategui and Carabobo.
In Caracas, the failures were recorded in Las Acacias, Colinas de Bello Monte, La Pastora, Caricuao, Lídice and Plaza Venezuela.

Inhabitants of La Trinidad, Lomas de la Trinidad, Baruta, La Bonita, Las Esmeraldas, San Román and Las Mercedes in the state of Miranda were also left without the service.

Two hours after the blackout, Néstor Reverol, Minister of Electric Power appointed by President Nicolás Maduro, offered statements about what happened in the system. He explained that there was an affectation in one of the lines located in the El Junco area in El Junquito. “This produced a disturbance of the system at the national level and part of the capital region (southeast), La Guaira and part of the state of Miranda were significantly affected».
He said that states such as Táchira, Mérida and Apure were at 5:30 pm with 80% of the service recovered.
“We are monitoring to guarantee the stability of the system, we have a weather warning number one that indicates that a tropical wave number 28 will affect the central coastal region of the country with torrential rains, which in turn produces electrical storms. Therefore, we presume that this affectation was due to an atmospheric discharge”, told state television VTV.
Reverol stated that the service would be fully recovered at approximately 6:30 pm.

On the other hand, this Saturday afternoon an explosion was also reported at a Corpoelec station located at kilometer 12 of El Junquito in Caracas. The Caracas Firefighters arrived in the area to control the incident.
