The Enrique Estrada Barracks Firefighters Museum seeks to pay tribute to the firefighters of the fire at the supertanker base in Matanzas with the idea of setting up a room destined to preserve the historical memory of the fatal incident, reported national media.
Cataloged as the biggest disaster faced by the Cuban Fire Department, the incident that occurred last friday august 5 has left its mark on the week of hard work and sacrifice on the part of firefighters, from different commands in the country.
Biolexi Ballester Quintana, director of the institution, specifies that they will seek to rescue experiences linked to the deceased and those who risked their lives through the anecdotes of the survivors, whose testimonies will be essential to understand the magnitude of what happened.
From the start, the specialist knew how complex the situation could become: “Seeing that huge explosion from my house, which is in front of the industrial area but on the other side of the bay, I didn’t want to think that someone was missing or injured, it is the instinct of not wanting to lose anyone you know despite knowing that the firefighters had to be there, “he recalled.
Since the names of the first disappeared were known, the director of the institution began the work of compiling the historical memory of what happened, including the fire trucks also present: “The Varadero Airport Command has six missing firefighters, it is the It is the first time in the history of the Cuban Fire Department that six people from the same team disappear like this in a single event,” he says in the published report.
Testimonials, images, assessments and other evidence will serve to organize as much information as possible for the subsequent assembly of the room in the Matanzas museum, located in the same building as Command Number One in Matanzas.
