Salman Rushdie's alleged attacker charged with attempted murder

Of Hadi Matar, 24, there are not many details beyond the fact that he lives in New Jersey and that he has not yet testified about the reasons he had for attacking Salman Rushdie, author of the novel “Satanic Verses”, who survives with assisted breathing

Authorities in New York accused this Saturday, August 13, Hadi Matar, the alleged author of the stabbing of writer Salman Rushdie, of attempted murder and assault and remains in custody without bail.

Of Matar, 24, there are not many details beyond the fact that he lives in the neighboring state of New Jersey, in Faireiew, and it is also unknown what motivated him to attack the author of the novel “Satanic Verses”, who survives with assisted breathing.

He was described by witnesses as a “furious” man, when he went on stage wearing a black mask, he was able to stab his victim several times and then fight with the security agents.

“We have been in contact with our counterparts in New Jersey, where the attacker is from, to share information and help them help us better understand the planning and preparation that preceded the attack so that we and different agencies involved can determine what other charges, if any, should be asserted,” indicated the Chautauqua County Prosecutor’s Office, in northern New York, according to local media.

“We will try to be as transparent as we can without compromising the case,” the Prosecutor’s Office also said, according to the published note by EFE.

Authorities believe Matar acted alone and requested a warrant to search a backpack and electronic devices. He was allegedly in possession of a false license in the name of Hassan Mughnyah, the same last name of the military leader of the Shia Hezbollah assassinated by the Mossad in 2008.

Rushdie was stabbed on Friday the 12th on a stage at an educational institution in the north of this state shortly before he was to give a lecture. Matar was identified as the aggressor by the authorities and arrested at the same place.

After the attack, the writer was taken to a hospital in Pennsylvania where he survives with assisted breathing, said his agent, Andrew Wylie, in a message to the newspaper The New York Times.

“There is no good news,” the agent said. “Salman will probably lose an eye and has severed nerves in one arm, and his liver was also stabbed and damaged,” he said.

Shortly before this statement, the New York State Police revealed that the writer had been admitted to the Eire Hospital, in Pennsylvania, where Rushdie “He was still in surgery” six hours after the attack, which gives an idea of the seriousness of his condition.
