The president of the state telecommunications company, Gabriel Gurméndez, attended this Friday the 12th the inauguration of two radio bases in the towns of Paso Bonilla and Sauce de Batoví, department of Tacuarembó. As he explained, the entity plans to reach more than 90 towns in the interior that lack connectivity, and works to install fiber optics in 141 cities, towns and localities, before the end of 2022.
Together with the head of the National Telecommunications Administration (Antel), the mayor of Tacuarembó, Wilson Ezquerra, authorities national, local, police and educational.
In his oratory, Gurméndez indicated that some 500 people live in Paso Bonilla and more than 800 in Sauce de Batoví. Their reality was very different, in terms of connectivity, compared to that of other Uruguayans who live in Montevideo, he said, and affirmed that Antel assumes the commitment to remedy inequities and achieve equal opportunities. “As a public company, our obligation is to arrive with the telecommunications connection, with an adequate service of good quality and good price,” he assured.
In this sense, he recalled that in Tacuarembó radio bases have already been installed in Punta de Cinco Sauces, Toscas de Caraguatá, Peralta, Montevideo Chico and Tambores. He also announced that they will soon arrive in Rincón de Zamora, Paso de los Novillos and Cerro del Pastoreo.
In dialogue with Presidential Communication, Gurméndez reported that Antel plans to reach more than 90 towns that lack connectivity with radio bases, of which 50 have already been installed in different locations.
He explained that the new base stations will allow the people of Tacuarembo to communicate with the world. He stressed that the arrival of the internet has a marked impact on people’s lives, and that workers will be able to offer their products and sell them in other markets in the country and the world, from their land.
Meanwhile, Ezquerra indicated that, in order to advance as a society, it is necessary to adapt to changes and join them. He valued that today more than 1,000 people will be able to access connectivity, which will allow them to live another reality. “All Uruguayans must have the same opportunities, and this will allow individual growth to become collective,” he concluded.
Optical fiber
On the occasion, Gurméndez reported that Antel is making a very important investment in fiber optics for the entire country. He specified that currently work is being done on 89 work fronts located in peripheral neighborhoods of Montevideo, where this technology did not reach, as well as in villas, towns and cities in the interior. “We are working to reach 141 villages and towns before the end of 2022, and remove the old copper connections in the first months of next year,” he announced.
For the department of Tacuarembó, fiber optics are planned to be installed this year in San Gregorio de Polanco, the Iporá spa and the urban area of Los Molles.
