Candidates break electoral propaganda laws

Some candidates have already begun to paper the streets of Asunción with their billboards, making advertisements to get votes, despite the fact that such actions are still prohibited.

The Superior Court of Electoral Justice had issued a statement mentioning the exact dates when electoral candidates could start using advertisements on the streets, the dates for advertisements on public roads are from November 16 to December 15.

Despite these provisions, some candidates have already gone ahead and began to place their postcards in the streets of Asunción. On Marshall Street. López, specifically on the corner of Recoleta, a gigantography of a candidate for deputy for “Republican Fervor” appeared. The electoral chief, Modesto Núñez, mentioned that “It is a crime and the regulations for posting posters are being violated in terms of the deadline, as every crime or punishable act corresponds to the criminal prosecutor, according to the corresponding complaint; the electoral prosecutor’s office can request the removal of that poster ”he mentioned.

He himself announced that the same situation also occurred in the cities of Luque and Capiatá, and in that case, the corresponding complaints have already been filed with the prosecutor’s office.

For her part, the prosecutor Mirian González mentioned that they had already been informed of said situation “We are going to be asking for the corresponding reports, it is the Municipality of Asunción that is in charge of informing if they have any permit, which I do not believe, and after that they leave determine what action to take, the fine must be applied by the municipality in accordance with the provisions of the municipal ordinances.” The authorities of each municipality are in charge of making the respective complaints so that legal action can be taken.

It is clear that several candidates ignore the current regulations and have already started their campaign outside the established times, we will have to wait to find out how much the fines amount to and if the posters will be removed. On Avda. Santa Teresa is another point where you can also see posters and banners with the image of candidate Santiago Peña.

As for the places, the municipalities must indicate the sites authorized to carry out electoral propaganda and in the case of a private property, there must be an express authorization from the owner. It is forbidden to carry out electoral propaganda on bridges, public buildings, monuments, traffic signs or pavements.
