The opposition governor indicated that they will be able to have an exact balance of the people affected by the overflow of the Socopó River in three to four days. He stated that there were no victims in the incident but there were many material losses. He described that the tributary, in addition to mud, dragged trees, pieces of houses and belongings
The governor of the state of Barinas, the opposition Sergio Garrido, expressed this Thursday August 11 exclusively to SuchWhich that two days after the overflow of the Socopó River was registered, they are working to clear the main communication routes of the mud and sediment that the tributary dragged when it exceeded the retaining wall.
Garrido compared the situation that occurred in the Antonio José de Sucre municipality —where the aforementioned river is located— with the Vargas tragedy of 1999. However, he clarified that the main difference between the two events is that in Barinas no human losses were recorded due to the incident.
He called on all those who can collaborate so that they can send food, water, medicine, clothing, as well as asking whoever owns a dump truck or machinery to collaborate in the affected area to speed up the recovery work of the highway.
He stated that the Socopó River dragged not only sediments from the bottom of the basin, but also trees and remains of houses and belongings that were destroyed by the force of the water.

Sergio Garrido stressed that the census is working on the affected people and clarified that it is not possible to speak exactly about the number of victims.
He explained that it takes at least three or four days to have a fairly accurate figure. What he did say is that there are a little more than 500 families affected until the afternoon of this Thursday, August 11.
However, he noted that soon they will be able to have a detailed management of the affected citizens, the material losses they recorded, among other things.
He warned that, although the Socopó River has dropped in level, if heavy rains are recorded, it can grow again and cause a new emergency.
He explained that the day before, when the Venezuelan president’s team, Nicholas Maduro, tried to communicate with him, they could not do so because he was in the Antonio José de Sucre municipality serving the communities affected by the overflow of the river. He emphasized that they are working hand in hand with the municipal governments and the central Executive.
The governor of Barinas stressed that so far there is communication with the central government and that they have been collaborating to solve the emergency by sending machinery, supplies and whatever is necessary.
In the morning hours, the journalist Wilmer Martínez commented on Radio Union that at least 600 families were affected in the state by the rains and 15 suffered total damage in Socopó. He stressed that solidarity has been felt among the neighbors and communities adjacent to the overflow of the river.
Jhorman Méndez, one of the affected residents in Socopó, said on the afternoon of August 10 that what happened was sudden and the river “swept away everything.”
Another of the neighbors, Marisela Sandoval, went to the disaster area to help her relatives. She described as “terrible” and “unfortunate” what happened. Like Méndez, she expressed that those affected lost everything.
