The Aeroméxico airline will restart its flights to Havana, Cuba, from the Mexico City International Airport (Aicm) as of October 30. According to a statementthe offer includes “nearly 10,000 seats per month” and tickets will be available starting this weekend.
The flights will depart from the Mexican airport to Havana at 8:40 am and 1:30 pm, Monday through Sunday; while from the José Martí International Airport to the Mexican capital they will operate from 2:45 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., also throughout the week, although they have not yet given details about the reestablishment of the Havana-Cancún route, widely used by the muleIt’s Cuban.
Aeroméxico, which began operations on the island in 2011, had to suspend the route during the covid-19 pandemic. This Wednesday’s announcement could offer hope to the lethargic transit of tourists to Cuba, but perhaps it will be more favorable for the journey of the mules that import goods to the informal market of the Island.
Despite the fact that the Minister of Economy and Planning, Alejandro Gil Fernández, announced encouraging figures for the sector during the first half of the year in July, with the arrival of 682,297 visitors, these represent a drop of 73% compared to those of 2019, when Cuba received about 2.6 million tourists.
This Wednesday’s announcement may be more favorable for the journey of the mules that import merchandise to the island’s informal market.
“We will continue promoting alliances with the Cuban capital to increase the flow of visitors to the Island,” was the message from Giancarlo Mulinelli, Aeroméxico’s vice president of global sales.
With this restart of operations with Havana, Aeroméxico expects the airline to reach a total of 570 daily flights to 90 national and international routes in the Caribbean region, which also includes trips to the Dominican Republic.
The incorporation of Aeroméxico to the flow between Cuba and Mexico could represent an additional incentive to the exodus that crosses the Island. The Mexican Government reported that, during the first semester of 2022, 56,270 Cubans arrived in that country by air, especially through the Viva Aerobus company.
The price of tickets on this airline ranged between 300 and 900 dollars depending on the city where the route begins. Viva Aerobus announced in March this year the implementation of three flights a week between Monterrey and Havana, in Airbus A320 aircraft with capacity for 186 passengers.
