This Saturday 37 Cuban rafters were arrested after they made landfall in the Florida Keys, according to official Thomas G. Martin in their social networks. Authorities were alerted to “a maritime smuggling event in Key West,” which allowed them to locate the people in two boats.
The Cubans were taken into custody and will be able to request asylum, by demonstrating to an immigration officer that they are afraid of returning to their country. If they convince the judge, they must post a bond. In the best of cases, they are released with a temporary residence permit in the United States known as parole.
Two other vessels landed off the coast of Broward County, north of Miami, Sunday. The first group with at least 15 people landed on a Fort Lauderdale beach. Local media reported on the presence of migrants, but no detainees were reported.
A second event occurred near Atlantic Blvd in Fort Lauderdale. Border Patrol agents took “nine immigrants” into custody without specifying their nationality and opened an investigation for possible “human trafficking.” At least “30 adults carrying bags” descended from the boat, witnesses claimed to Local 10 News.

As of December 13, Border Patrol agents 15 Cuban rafters were arrested after making landfall in a homemade boat near Summerland Key.
On December 7, the Coral Gables (Florida) police handed over to the United States Customs and Border Protection Office seven Cuban migrants who were found barefoot wandering inside a park in that city located in Miami-Dade County.
Eight days before, 18 Cubans were intercepted after making landfall at Marathon Cay. According to reports, they were taken, as usual, to a migration center, where they are given the opportunity to demonstrate “credible fear” of being returned to the island.
According to official sources, in the last two months 293 Cubans have been intercepted at sea by the Coast Guard, and in one month, from October to November, 77 rafters were returned to the island. From October 2020 to September 2021 , 838 Cuban rafters tried to enter the United States.
