Velez Sarsfield sealed this Wednesday his passport to the semifinals of the Libertadores Cupinstance in which it will be quoted with flamingoafter beating away 0-1 to Cordoba Workshops in the second leg of the Argentine series.
A goal by Julián Fernández in the 78th minute allowed Fortín to extend the lead they had gained last week, when they won 3-2 at their José Amalfitani stadium, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Liniers.
After the tension experienced in the first leg match with the Cordoba supporters, the Argentine series had a special focus on the 1,100 Police officers who guarded this match, which was not allowed the presence of visiting public in the stands of the Kempes stadium.
Vélez Sarsfield, Copa Libertadores champion in 1994 under coach Carlos Bianchi, came to this meeting with the mission of proposing an offensive game. Vélez scored in the 3rd minute of the game through Lucas Pratto, but the Paraguayan referee Eber Aquino did not concede the goal after consulting the VAR, where a handball by Lucas Janson was revealed.
Talleres took control of the game but without the necessary clarity to undermine the visiting team’s defense and make Lucas Hoyos’ goal fall. The locals showed more desire than clarity to equalize the tie.
At the beginning of the second half, an arrival by Rodrigo Garro that was not just cleared at the corner kick and after an inaccurate header by Valoyes himself were the options of the local team driven by the encouragement of their public.
At 58 minutes Leonardo Jara was left lying on the field due to a blow to the head and had to be seen by the doctor and, on the same play, Federico Girotti took a wrong step and suffered an injury to his right ankle that led him to be replaced by the Uruguayan Michael Santos.
Just a few minutes later, a foul by Francisco Ortega on Garro was worth a new call from the VAR to evaluate a possible expulsion, but Eber Aquino determined that it was only a warning play.
And around the 78th minute, Vélez managed to sentence the series with a good recovery of the ball by Máximo Perrone that allowed Lucas Janson to enable the entered Julián Fernández, who after eluding Guido Herrera pushed the ball into the back of the net.
It was the final thrust of the same player who seven days earlier had put the final 3-2 at the Liniers stadium for Vélez to access the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores.
In this phase, Vélez’s rival will be Flamengo, who prevailed with authority 3-0 on aggregate against Corinthians, after a 0-2 away win in the first leg and 1-0 at home in the second leg.
