Serena Williams gives in at the WTA 1000 in Toronto against the Olympic champion

The WTA 1000 in Toronto paid tribute to the legendary Serena Williams, who said goodbye to the contest on Wednesday when she fell in the second round against Belinda Bencic. The super champion announced that she is playing her last weeks as a professional tennis player.

The former number 1 in the world said goodbye to the Canadian Open this Wednesday, when she was defeated by the Swiss Belinda Bencic in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) in the second round.

In a great gesture, the monarch of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games gave only a few brief statements after her victory and gave her time and space to her rival, who is considered by many to be the greatest player in history.

Serena tried to contain the emotion, but once she began to offer words on the center court of Toronto, and with a massive encouragement from the public present, in the end she ended with tears in an emotional farewell to the Canadian contest, which saw her the winner in three opportunities (2001, 2011 and 2013).

The 40-year-old American made it known on Tuesday through a letter published in Vogue magazine that she is ready to “evolve” in her life, implying that she is living her last days as a professional tennis player.

In the upcoming US Open, a ‘Major’ event that saw her champion six times, the youngest of the Williams sisters would have her farewell tournament to close a career little less than unmatched, with 73 WTA singles titles, 23 of them Grand Slam.
