Environmental groups and self-convened neighbors participated this Wednesday in a massive protest in Rosario, to demand an end to the fires in the Paraná islands, and announced a cut “for an indefinite period” of the Rosario-Victoria bridge on September 3 and 4.
Likewise, during the summons it was demanded “a greater action of justice and punishment for those responsible for the burning in the islands of the Paraná Delta and the sanction of a Wetlands Law”.
The massive demonstration took place minutes after 6:00 p.m., in front of the National Monument to the Flag, where thousands of people from Rosario and neighboring towns expressed “their disgust with the smoke and the burning in the Delta islands.”
The call was launched under the motto “Enough of burning, enough of smoke, enough of this violence”, by the environmental organizations El Paraná No se Toca and Multisectorial Wetlands, among other environmental groups in the area.
During the demonstration, an Open Radio was held and, simultaneously, a fire broke out on the Entre Ríos islands located in a straight line to the National Monument to the Flag.
“We want to live safely and have a future, we have to take care of the planet and that is why we ask for a Wetlands Law in which the population participates, not a law washed for economic interests”, said one of the self-convened speakers.
Meanwhile, Verónica Carrizo, from Red Alert, pointed out that “once again we are holding a massive concentration. We have been fighting for a wetland law for three years”.
“There are multiple organizations that have agreed to say enough to the burnings. Today they continue to suffocate us with smoke and this call is telling us that the situation is dire at the environmental level”, he asserted.
After pointing out that “from here, today a fight plan has to come out until a wetland law is complied with”, the environmentalist added: “there is no more time, and this very weekend we have to cut the bridge for an indefinite period of time ”.
For his part, another environmentalist, who identified himself as Matías, from San Nicolás, said: “We are tired of breathing this death, and fed up with the fact that the profits of the businessmen are worth more than our well-being.”
“We cannot be complicit in this. Earlier today the road was blocked by smoke. We are tired of roads being cut off and people dying from the smoke, ”she added, referring to the fatal accidents caused in recent days.
Diego Leone, from the Re Sapiens de Rosario organization, also said that “They are killing us with smoke, accidents are killing people and the smell we feel lately is crematorium, there are animals and plants that burn”sentenced.
Then he said that In relation to the burning, “there are defendants” and he cited the businessmen “Enzo Mariani, Baggio, a landowner of five thousand hectares, José Aranda, vice president of Grupo Clarín and a rice landowner; and Enzo Vignales, organizer of clandestine parties on the islands”.
After 8:30 p.m., environmentalists continued to debate different strategies to continue fighting for an end to burning in the Delta and a “consensual wetland law.”
