The numbers of the guard in CDMX
According to the registry of crime victims, the Desarrollo Urbano Quetzalcóatl neighborhood, in Iztapalapa, was one of the areas with the highest crime rates at the time the National Guard operation was launched in Mexico City.
In 2019, seven victims of intentional homicide by firearm in that colony, six of which were accounted for before the entry of the National Guard. There was only one between July and December, which suggests that the presence of the corporation had an immediate impact on the levels of violence.
By 2020, already in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the confinement derived from it, the 10 intentional homicides, five of which occurred between July and December. In this case, unlike the previous year, the figures show that this crime increased compared to the previous comparable period, despite the deployment of the National Guard.
Now, in 2021, the number of intentional homicides has fallen again: from January to October, only two murders in the colony.
In the case of the crime of robbery with violence on public roads, in 2019 there were 52 victims, in 2020 there were 95 and so far in 2021 there are 68, numbers that show that last year there was a rebound despite the presence of the National Guard and that in this the reports have decreased again, although not to the levels of 2019.
Another of the most common crimes in the Desarrollo Urbano Quetzalcóatl neighborhood is the robbery of a passenger with violence in public transport. In this area, 16 victims were registered from July to December 2019, 26 in 2020 and 14 in 2021. Again, this crime increased in 2020 despite the National Guard and fell this year, although the latter may not be due to a reinforcement of security, but because people began to have another safer option to move around: Line 2 of the Cablebús.
In Gustavo A. Madero, the other capital city hall where the National Guard was first deployed, the results have also varied.
In July 2019, when the National Guard arrived at the demarcation, 2,045 total crimes were registered, according to statistics from the Attorney General’s Office (FGJCDMX). By July 2020, the number dropped to 1,800, but rose again in July 2021 to 1,970.
At the beginning of this month, authorities of the central government and the demarcation acknowledged that there was a spike in homicides in November , so the security strategy will be reinforced.
The Secretary of Citizen Security, Omar García Harfuch, said at the time that “relevant arrests” had recently been made, with which he hopes that “a significant decrease in homicides can be seen.”
