The strategic importance of Edomex

Provoke is not debate

That demographic-electoral weight makes Edomex a unique space, in itself and because of what it represents at the federal level, to know not only the mobilization capacity of parties and candidates, but also how the preferences of citizens are distributed.

It is well known, moreover, how powerful are the old patronage machines that predominate in the state (particularly in the conurbation municipalities of the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico, where close to 70% of the Mexican electorate is concentrated). Whoever manages to add them to his cause will have a hand in 2023 and, if he ends up becoming the governor, he will have a privileged place to “operate” in the 2024 election.

And I am not referring only to the presidential one, but also to the one that will determine the composition of the Chamber of Deputies, where Edomex is the state that has the largest legislative contingent (41 deputies with a relative majority and 25 with proportional representation), and including the Headquarters of Government of Mexico City.

Edomex, along with Coahuila, is one of the only two entities where the PRI has never lost; one of the few bastions left to the once great game. And it is also the place of origin of one of the most influential political cliques of that party in recent decades, the so-called “Grupo Atlacomulco”, with which former President Enrique Peña Nieto is linked and whose perhaps last representative ends up being the current governor Alfredo del Mazo Maza, his cousin in the third degree and, in turn, son and grandson of state governors.

In this sense, it is impossible not to interpret the recent news about the FIU investigation or the FGR files against Peña Nieto as signs, at least in part, of a political intention directly related to the electoral process next year in Edomex. . But also, by the way, with the scandals that the current leader of the PRI, Alejandro Moreno, has caused, and, in particular, with his resistance to the pressures that from inside and outside the party itself seek his dismissal.
