Mar-a-Lago, former President Donald Trump’s residence in Florida, was raided by FBI agents on Monday.

Trump issued a statement late tonight saying federal investigators were there. “My beautiful Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida is currently besieged, raided and occupied by a large group of FBI agents,” he said.

“After working and cooperating with relevant government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate,” the former president said, adding that agents “even broke into my safe.”

“Nothing like this has ever happened to a president of the United States before,” he concluded.

The unprecedented search of a former president’s home could only be carried out with a judge’s approval and a convincing argument that evidence of a crime was within the walls of Mar-a-Lago, experts say.

The fact could denote evidence of a crime. According to observers, it could be connected to the investigation into January 6 and the revelation by the National Archives and Records Administration that Trump had taken classified documents with him to his Florida mansion.

In February, the National Archives said they had found classified documents in 15 White House record boxes stored at Mar-a-Lago.

The agency said at the time that the matter had been referred to the Justice Department.
