According to the official media Latin Pressthe Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, led the Cuban delegation that attended the inauguration of Gustavo Petro.
Petro, a 62-year-old former guerrilla, is the first president from the left in 200 years of republican history to arrive at Casa Nariño.
According to a note from the news agency APPetro’s presidential team will have to overcome the growing violence that has claimed the lives of more than 560 human rights defenders since 2016 alone, the highest inflation in the last two decades, and the search for consensus in a highly divided country.
At the end of last July, the Colombian president expressed his interest in Cuba once again hosting the peace talks with the National Liberation Army (ELN).
The talks with the Colombian insurgents were suspended during the term of outgoing President Iván Duque, after the Cuban regime refused to extradite members of the ELN to Colombia after the attack on the General Santander Police Cadet School, a terrorist attack perpetrated on January 17, 2019 by the ELN itself.
