“I extend my hand to the president Gustavo Petro and to the Colombian people, to rebuild brotherhood on the basis of respect and love. Let’s take advantage of this second opportunity that the new President of Colombia mentions, for the sake of happiness and peace,” Maduro wrote on Twitter, after concluding the inaugural message of the Petro government, this Sunday, August 7.
On August 5, Petro Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva said that the reopening of the border is a gradual process and that it must be led by a Colombian ambassador in Caracas, since diplomatic relations between the two countries must first be restored.
For Leyva, the normalization of relations is necessary. But, in addition, he pointed out, there must be other situations such as reactivating the productive apparatus in the border area and finding a way to satisfy the needs of the people who live there.
In February 2019, Maduro broke off relations with Colombia after now-ex-president Iván Duque recognized the president of the 2015 National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, as president in charge of Venezuela.
