the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, did not begin the first speech of his four-year term, until the sword of the Liberator did not arrive at the inauguration ceremony, in the Plaza de Bolívar, this Sunday, August 7.

The president sent for the sword with the Military House after the refusal of former President Iván Duque.

The sword, of which Petro has highlighted its symbology, was not present at the beginning of the act, because Ivan Duke, declined the request for security reasons.

When, after a break, the sword arrived, those attending Petro’s investiture shouted: “Alert, alert that walks, Bolívar’s sword for Latin America”.

“Arriving here next to Bolívar’s sword is a lifetime. I don’t want it to be buried anymore, it’s the people’s sword,” Petro said. The president said that the sword must become a permanent echo, a formal and silent echo every time a President is sworn in.

In his speech, Petro addressed, in a special way to the Colombian people, and made reference to workers, cleaners and representatives of civil society present at the event.

“Today our second chance begins. We’ve earned it, they’ve earned it. The effort will be worth it », she asserted.

Likewise, Petro baptized his nascent administration as «the government of life. This is how it will be remembered. Peace is possible if we unleash social dialogue. It is society as a whole that must talk about how not to kill us.

He proposed penal benefits to the armed groups in exchange for them signing the peace. «We call on all the armed to leave their weapons in the nebulae of the past. To accept legal benefits in exchange for peace, in exchange for the definitive non-repetition of violence », he affirmed.

The first leader of the left, and former guerrilla, of the neighboring country assured that the war against drugs has failed completely. “He has left a million Latin Americans murdered in the last 40 years,” he pointed out.

Petro, who promised that he will not be “trapped in the curtains of the bureaucracy,” presented the decalogue of his government. The first point is to work to achieve true and definitive peace.

“We are going to comply with the Peace Agreement and follow the recommendations of the report of the Truth Commission (…) Peace is the meaning of my life, it is the hope of Colombia,” he pointed out.

In the same way, the president promised to take care of grandparents, children, people with disabilities, and those who “History or society has marginalized.” The third point of Petro’s decalogue refers to governing for and with the women of Colombia.

“Today, here, a parity government begins and with a Ministry of Equality,” said the president, whose vice president is France Marquez.

Petro insisted, in his decalogue, that he will dialogue with all sectors and for this reason, he assured that there will be no exclusions in what will be an open-door government.

“We are going to build a Great National Agreement to set the roadmap for Colombia for the coming years. Dialogue will be my method, agreements my objective », he said.

He also offered to listen to Colombians because they do not govern from a distance, away from the people and disconnected from their realities. Government. The sixth point of Petro’s decalogue is to defend Colombians from violence through a comprehensive security strategy. He follows him fighting corruption.

“We are going to recover what was stolen, watch so that it is not done again and transform the system to discourage this type of practice. Neither family, nor friends, nor colleagues, nor collaborators. no one is excluded from the weight of the Law, from the commitment against corruption and from my determination to fight against it », he said.

He asserted that there will be no persecution of dissidence and the free press. The last three points of the decalogue refer to the protection of the soil and subsoil, seas and rivers; the development of the national industry, the popular economy and the Colombian countryside, and, finally, compliance with the Constitution.

Regional integration

Petro was critical of the situation in the region. In this sense, he maintained that “Latin American unity cannot be a rhetoric.” Therefore, he insisted on unity.

“Today we need to be more together and united than ever. As Simón Bolívar once said: ‘Union must save us, just as division will destroy us if it comes between us.’ Let the division of Latin America come to an end. But Latin American unity cannot be a rhetoric, a mere speech », he stressed.

The new President of the neighboring country said that for Latin America it is «time to leave behind the blocks, the groups and the ideological differences to work together».

«Let us understand once and for all that there is much more that unites us than what separates us. And that together we are stronger. Let’s make that unity dreamed of by our heroes, like Bolívar, San Martín, Artigas, Sucre and O’Higgins, a reality. It is not a utopia nor is it romanticism », he pointed out.
