Petro asked that Bolívar’s sword be part of the inauguration ceremony this Sunday. This for considering it “a symbolic act within the transition from presidential command to a government that represents change and the fight against poverty and inequality,” said the organizing team of the event.

The Petro team reported, this Sunday in a statement, that “after the elected president, Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, expressed to the outgoing president Iván Duque, his wish that Bolívar’s sword could be part of the symbolic acts of the presidential possession and that the organizing team of the event will manage all the permits required for the transfer of the sword from the Casa de Nariño to the Plaza de Bolívar, President Duque did not authorize its departure at the last minute on the grounds of security of is”.

The new President of Colombia also recently said that the unsheathed sword is not a symbol of war but, “as its owner said when he unsheathed it, that it should only be sheathed when there is justice in Colombia.”

In his farewell speech, on Saturday, August 6, Duque told Colombians that he assumed his presidential administration “with the greatest commitment, sense of responsibility and love for the country. The achievements give us the peace of mind to tell them that our legacy was built on undeniable facts.”
