Sunrise in Matanzas
The city of killings This Sunday, August 7, dawns with the same panorama of the last 36 hours. An immense column of smoke rises from the Industrial Zone, where two of the eight fuel tanks of the Supertanker Base remain under fire, which caught fire between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
The intensity of the fire has not decreased, although the efforts of the firefighters have prevented it from spreading to the surrounding tanks. At the end of Saturday night, the Matanzas authorities explained that there was a possibility that a third tank would collapse, but the temperature around them was lowered.
Together, specialists from the Fire Department and the Armed Forces put into operation a pump to extract water from the sea and increase the flow to the cistern, which has been key so that the temperature around the tanks does not rise excessively.
Firefighters from Villa Clara and Mexican and Venezuelan technicians with experience in this type of incident joined the forces that work in the Industrial Zone.
It is expected that in the early hours of the morning foreign specialists will be able to better assess the situation, to then begin to combat the fire with the products and chemicals that they themselves brought in the first international aid missions that have arrived on the Island.
