During the meeting, the minister proposed the creation of the Brazil-Colombia Business Council. He also defended the strengthening of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) “, informed the Itamaraty, in a post on social networks.

At the meeting, Carlos França presented the candidacy of professor Leonardo Caldeira Brant to the position of judge of the International Court of Justice, in the vacancy resulting from the death of professor Antônio Cançado Trindade.

In addition to meeting with the Colombian foreign minister, Minister Carlos França also met with specialists from Brazil and Colombia in the area of ​​security and defense, two of the most important agendas between the two countries.

The Itamaraty Palace also defended the Peace Agreement concluded by Colombia with the country’s rural guerrillas. “Brazil supports the implementation of the Peace Agreement signed in 2016 in Colombia. Since 2006, Brazilian military personnel have contributed to the destruction of landmines in the neighboring country and directly participated in the certification of more than 8,000 deminers,” the ministry said.

This Sunday (7), the Brazilian chancellor participates in the inauguration of the new Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, the first left-wing ruler elected to command the neighboring country. Appointed by President Jair Bolsonaro, Minister Carlos França will be the main representative of the Brazilian government at the event.

Partnership

Brazil and Colombia share more than 1,600 kilometers of border in the Amazon Rainforest. The neighboring country has more than 50.8 million inhabitants and is the third largest economy in South America, after Brazil and Argentina.

According to Itamaraty, Brazil and Colombia are relevant partners in topics such as trade, investment, Amazonian cooperation, health, energy, security and defense. Colombia is one of Brazil’s largest trading partners in Latin America and is among the main investment destinations for Brazilian companies.

The trade flow (imports + exports) between the two countries had its best historical performance in 2021, reaching US$ 5.36 billion. In the first six months of 2022, the bilateral flow reached US$ 3.28 billion, an increase of 35.6% compared to the same period in 2021.
