On the morning of this Friday, there were no debris left from the deadly collapse that occurred the night before in the building on Angeles street corner Máximo Gómez (Monte), where so far a fatal victim, Rolando León, has been confirmed.
It was the president himself Miguel Díaz-Canel who has identified him, in a tweet in which, with hours of delay, he also offered condolences to his relatives.
On the busy corner of the Jesús María neighborhood, in Old Havana, there was only a little dust left by the concrete when it collapsed. A brigade of the provincial government propped up the building and elicited expressions of disgust and unease from the residents.
Several neighbors complained to state workers for the adjoining buildings, which are in the same condition as the one affected. “These buildings are about to collapse or worse are these buildings and everyone is silent, then they fall and one goes for the hole and nothing happens. One dies and everything remains the same, “one of the residents of the place complained.” What you have to do is protest, “the woman continued very angrily.
“Who am I going to talk to? The delegate [del Poder Popular]? What problem is she going to solve for me? I’m tired of complaining. I’ve been everywhere, “shouted another neighbor from the crowd.
Without much vigilance from the Police and State Security agents, 14ymedio was able to confirm that the deceased person, whose identity has not yet been disclosed by the official media, is a passerby who was walking about nine ten minutes at night in front of the property.
In the place lives a family with a minor, according to a resident of the area. There is a basin on the second floor, as shown in the images taken by this newspaper, in addition to other personal objects. “During the collapse the family was able to leave, although the ground floor, which is where they live, did not fall,” he explained.
Despite the incident last night and still without finishing propping up the house, several members of the family went in and out of the house and it is presumed that they will continue to live in the place.
“The portal [que da hacia la calle Monte] It is almost on the ground, it is completely cracked and you can see that it is about to fall. I wouldn’t even shore it up. These people have to be taken out of there and taken to another place, “commented other neighbors who watched as the brigade put wooden struts to hold the facade of the house.
Monte has traditionally been one of the most important commercial arteries of the Cuban capital. However, the years without maintenance, its low tourist interest and laziness have made it one of the streets in the worst condition in the city. Going through their portals or getting into their businesses can be considered a high-risk sport.
Jesús María is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the capital. In January 2020, three girls died about 700 meters from this point when a balcony collapsed in the same neighborhood, between Vives and Revillagigedo streets. The structure collapsed when the minors were playing when they left school and were on the sidewalk rehearsing for the acts for the birth of José Martí.
