The Association of Relatives of the Detained, Disappeared and Disregarded (Afamidesa) asked the president Louis Abinader create the National Institute of Disappeared Persons (Inaped), which seeks to locate the disappeared and provide psychological and legal assistance to their families.
Joseph A. Thomaspresident of the entity, explained that the purpose is for the State to have, as ordered by the Constitution, the resources to locate any missing person.
He argued that the creation of this body should include a economic background for this entity to carry out the investigations and hire an international staff to train the country’s investigators in this matter.

“In the last 20 years, dozens of men and women have disappeared from the country, mostly young, whose relatives have been desperately looking for them for years and with little help from the authorities, who have no resources or specialized personnel to locate their relatives” Thomas said.
He stated that he makes the proposal with great optimism, because he knows about the human sensitivity of President Abinader, especially on those distressing issues.
On the other hand, AFAMIDESA and DEDEDIN consider that the Minister of the Interior should evaluate and weigh their proposal, since the weapons recovery programs in the neighborhoods of the country have shown that thousands of firearms are in the hands of citizens in an irregular manner.
