Five people convicted of drug trafficking

In an oral and public trial, Edgar Giménez Gaona was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months for possession of narcotic substances and bribery, and Carlos Javier Silguero, sentenced to 6 years for possession of narcotic substances. Meanwhile, Alexis Darío Benítez Espínola, Felipe Albino Rodríguez Penayo and Hernando Guzmán Orué were sentenced to 3 years in prison as accomplices.

This case began on February 11, 2021, when in the early hours of the morning on Route PY 06 “Dr. Juan León Mallorquín”, in the Campiñas Verdes neighborhood of the Santa Rita district, police officers from Police Station 18, during a routine check, spotted two vehicles traveling at high speed and chased them until they caught up with them and checked the cell phone that was at the command of Édgar Giménez and who had Carlos Silguero as a companion, in whom they found 232 kilos of pressed marijuana.

In the other vehicle guided by Alexis Benítez and in which Felipe Rodríguez and Hernando Guzmán were, they did not find drugs, but according to the investigation it was found that they were accomplices and that they were acting as “pointers” for the cell phone that carried the marijuana.

Prosecutor Elvio Aguilera, in his final arguments, presented the evidence showing that they were all members of the same drug trafficking structure and requested that they all be sentenced.
