Bogotá and New York seek to promote the '24-hour economy'

The Mayor’s Office of Bogotá and its counterpart in New York announced this Wednesday, August 3, the launch of the 24 hour city network in collaboration with City Possible, a Mastercard initiative.

According to a press release, this new global network “will allow city leaders and anyone interested”, come together and share their experiences and best practices, for the promotion of innovative solutions“that address the challenges that cities face at night”, and that “ensure that the economies of the world’s cities are aimed at 24-hour operation”.

Alfredo Bateman, Secretary of Economic Development of Bogotá, indicated that “Bogotá’s participation represents an opportunity to strengthen strategies and actions aimed at the internationalization, positioning, promotion and cooperation of the city”, he also stressed that “the fact that a city has economic activity 24 hours a day, translates into an increase in productivity that boosts the economy and that, in the long term, will generate enormous benefits for all”.

In turn, Jody Barnett, director of the ‘City Possible’ network at Mastercard, said that “the launch of the 24-hour city network embodies the reason we created City Possible: for cities to listen to each other. , address shared challenges collaboratively and promote strategies that solve problems at the frontier of urban innovation,” said

During the year 2021, the ‘Bogotá 24 hours’ strategy benefited 5,009 businesses in 11 locations in the city distributed in 13 zoneshad an estimated 24,000 visitors at 3 city events: Macarenazo Festival, Candelaria Camina and Open San Felipe, spaces that impacted the economic sectors of art, fashion, gastronomy and the furniture and wood sector.

In this 2022, the Secretariat of Economic Development seeks to consolidate the night management, together with the instances that formalize the articulation of actions and supply, for the development of the economic activity during unconventional hoursand advance in the identification of incentives and actions that allow forming zones cataloged as Creative Districts, with commercial offer and services in non-conventional hours.
